Grant HALRIC 2023

Marie Skepö (PI) with postdoc Henrik Vinther Sörensen in collaboration with Adam Round European XFEL Hamburg Germany and  Ann Terry MAX IV Laboratory have received a HALRIC grant, which focuses on experiments to better understand a family of proteins that are of utmost importance for human health. Around 30% of all proteins in eukaryotic organisms have recently been shown to belong to intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) involved in many central biological processes and diseases. The research group foresee that the combination of scattering and imaging techniques to analyze IDPs can serve as a proof-of-concept study. The results are expected to constitute a significant step towards deciphering the structure-function relationship of IDPs, which is vital for developing the next generations of pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics, i.e., antimicrobial peptides.

Grant AMBER postdoc in Biological Imaging, 2023

Marie Skepö has received a postdoc grant through the LINXS to coordinate EU CoFund postdoctoral programme on advanced multiscale biological imaging, https://www.linxs.se/news/2023/11/6/linxs-to-coordinate-the-amber-postdoctoral-programme-on-advanced-multiscale-biological-imaging-funding-47-researcher-positions-in-collaboration-with-major-research-centres-all-over-europe. The position will be opened in 2025.

Grant Carl Trygger, 2023

Marie Skepö has received a grant from Carl Trygger, https://www.carltryggersstiftelse.se, to partly cover the experimental work of the project: Histatins: Saliva proteins with important functions for our innate immune system.

Grant NanoLund, 2023

Marie Skepö (PI) in collaboration with Oxana Klementieva, Medical Faculty, Ann Terry, MAX IV, and Judith Houston, ESS, have received a two year grant from NanoLund, https://www.nano.lu.se/start, for studying Histatins: Saliva proteins with important functions for our innate immune system. The funding is aimed for partly financing a PhD-student.

Grant for PRISMAS PhD-student, 2022

Marie Skepö (PI), in collaboration with the CoSAXS-team at MAX IV and Astra Zeneca in Gothenburg have obtained a grant through PRISMAS, which is a  – PhD Research and Innovation in Synchrotron Methods and Applications in Sweden – is a new doctoral programme training the next generation of leading synchrotron experts. The PRISMAS program has received funding from the European Union’s COFUND action, a part of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Program within the European Commission MSCA framework. Expected announcement of the position is spring 2023, and the project will focus on liquid-liquid phase separation mediated by phosphorylated intrinsically disordered proteins utilizing computer simulations in combination with SAXS. Besides conventional SAXS measurements or sample environments, addition of instrumentation as stopped-flow devices could bring new information to the study.  For more information, please see: https://www.maxiv.lu.se/education-outreach/programs-and-activities/prismas/. PRISMAS includes an on-site secondment at the large-scale research facility and synchrotron MAX IV in Lund, Sweden.

Grant for WISE-post doc in material science, 2022

Marie Skepö (PI) in collaboration with Daniel Topgaard, and Leif Bulow, has received a postdoc in material science through the Wallenberg Initiative Materials Science for Sustainability (WISE, wise-materials.org). WISE, funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, is the largest-ever investment in materials science in Sweden and will encompass major efforts at Sweden’s foremost universities over the course of 10 years. The vision is a sustainable future through materials science. Read more: https://wise-materials.org. The project is about using clay as a green fertilizer, and for this study we aim to use computer simulations in combination with NMR, SAXS, and osmotic stress measurements.

Grant for Neutron Research awarded by NordForsk

Marie Skepö (PI), has in collaboration with Lise Arleth and Kresten Lindorff-Larsen at University of Copenhagen, and Jens Preben Morth at University of Oslo, been awarded 6.8 MNOK for studying the structure of membrane proteins under solution conditions. The aim is to understand how the lipid environment influences the activity of membrane proteins, using the active transporter MgtA as benchmark system, and to investigate the dynamic fluctuations between lipid and protein in solution, utilising neutron and X-ray scattering in combination with computer simulations.

Research projects

  • To reveal static and dynamic properties of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) to provide a deeper understanding of the mechanism of action and the static as well as dynamic structure-function relationship.

  • Establish a quantitative link between polymer theory, computer simulations, and experiments, predominantly scattering, for IDPs.
  • Pushing the boundaries regarding analyzing scattering data with computer simulations.
  • Structural and thermodynamical properties of colloids with focus on anisotropic particles (clay).
