European Summerschool in Quantum Chemistry (ESQC-05)

Hotel Villagio Torre Normanna
September 4-17, 2005

GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction
The European summerschool in quantum chemistry will take place for the tenth time from September 4 to September 17, 2005. The goal of the school is to introduce the participants to modern methods and computational techniques in quantum chemistry. More and more scientists in different fields of chemistry are using theoretical methods in their research, either as a technique per se, or as a complement to experimental work. As a result there is a growing need to acquire the background knowledge necessary for skilful use of these methods. The European Summer School in Quantum Chemistry (ESQC) was started with the aim of disseminating such knowledge. The first school was held in August 1989. The emphasis of the school is more on understanding than on the technical aspects of methods and much time will be devoted to the discussion of different electronic structure problems and the choice of appropriate methods for their solution. The course will consist of both lectures and tutorials.

The location of the school will be Hotel Villaggio Torre Normanna , a conference centre located about 40 km east of Palermo, Sicily, Italy.

Since the participants of the school come from different countries with different backgrounds in theoretical chemistry, the assumed initial level of knowledge has been set relatively low. The participants are assumed to have at least basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry as represented, for example, by Molecular Quantum Mechanics, P. W. Atkins (Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1983).
In connection with the registration, you are asked to answer some questions, which have been constructed in order to give us an impression of the general level of knowledge among the students. Your answers will not be registered separately, only the collected level of expertise will be measured. The data will NOT BE USED to select students for the school. So, please fill in this form and submit it with your binding registration!

The content and extent of the major courses is briefly described here.

They will be supplemented by introductions to linear algebra, numerical methods, second quantization techniques, etc. Contemporary high level computations, computer programs and their availability, and trends in computational quantum chemistry will be treated both in lectures and discussions. For those interested, it will also be possible to run some ab initio quantum chemistry software on workstations that will be available at the school (note, however, that no internet connections will be available). The lectures, four each day, will be followed by problem sessions in the afternoons. Late evenings will be used for tutorials and discussions.

A contributed poster session will take place on Sunday, September 11, allowing the participants to present their own work in the field of quantum chemistry. Please indicate your interest in presenting a poster when you register.

The total fee for the summer school is 10 000 SEK for university participants and 20 000 SEK for others. The price includes food and lodging in single rooms and also the tuition fee, and school material (including three text books). The number of students is limited to around 70. Participation can therefore not be guaranteed for all applicants. The 2005 school will have very little external support, so there will be very few bursaries available. It will therefore be assumed that the majority of the students can find their own financial sources to cover their expenses. A small number of bursaries might, however, be available, so please inform us if you wish to apply for such support. It is nevertheless wise to investigate all other possible means of covering the expenses, since the number of such applications is certain to be much larger than the number of available bursaries. It is important that you understand that if you ask for financial support you will be placed on a priority list from which those getting bursaries will be selected. If you are not selected at this point, it may be too late to change your mind and apply for place without any financial assistance. You should therefore ask for support only if this is your sole option.

We would like to have your registration before April 1, 2005. However, if there are more than 70 applications we may close the registration earlier. (This has happened with previous schools.) We expect you to pay a registration fee of SEK 1000 when you register. Your registration will be valid when this registration fee has been received in Lund. Please fill in the binding registration form, PRINT IT, SIGN IT, AND SEND IT it to the school via ordinary mail. At the same time pay the registration fee according to the instructions given. Notice that only those paying this fee can be guaranteed a place at the present time, and they will also later have to pay the full board. We need, however, the registration form also from those of you who are asking for financial support. In this case, you should also enclose your CV and a letter of recommendation from your supervisor or tutor. Your participation will be decided when we know the exact amount of funding and the total request for support. Please, try to meet the given deadline, otherwise you might risk losing your place at the school. Do not pay the registration fee if you are asking for financial support.

Payment
Final registration for the ESQC-05 must be made no later than April 1, 2005, by payment in full of the registration fee (SEK 1 000 for university participants and SEK 2 000 for others). However, the earlier you register, the greater is the chance that there will be a place for you. Note that this registration fee is normally non-refundable.  Payment should be made to:

Föreningen ESQC-89 (account owner)
55 60 80 - 0 (account number)
Postgiro Bank AB, SE.10506 Stockholm, Sweden (bank address)
Swift address NDEASESS
IBAN SE57 9500 0099 6026 0556 0800

IMPORTANT: Quote the following with your payment (otherwise we don't know who sent the money!):
ESQC-05 European Summer School in Quantum Chemistry
Your Name

This is the best option. It is very important that you indicate with the payment the name of the participating student. We sometimes have great difficulties in figuring out where the money comes from! You may also send us a check. Make it payable to ESQC-05 and add SEK 100 for our banking fees. When you send in the registration form, please include a copy of the receipt, showing that you have sent the money. Notice that also those of you that ask for a scholarship should send in the registration form, but not pay any registration fee at this stage.
