General information about the European Summerschool in Quantum Chemistry, 2003 (ESQC-03)The European summerschool in quantum chemistry will be arranged for the nineth time in August 17 - 30, 2003. The goal of the school is to introduce the participants into modern methods and computational techniques in quantum chemistry. More and more scientists in different field of chemistry are using theoretical methods in their research, either as a technique per se, or as a complement to experimental work. As a result there is a growing need to acquire the background knowledge necessary for a skillful use of these methods. The European Summer School in Quantum Chemistry (ESQC) was started with the aim of disseminating such knowledge. The first school was held in August 1989.The emphasis of the school will be more on understanding than on the technical aspects of methods, and much time will be devoted to the discussion of different electronic structure problems and the choice of appropriate methods for their solution. The course will consist of both lectures and exercises. The total fee for the summer school includes food and lodging and a small tuition fee. It will be assumed that the majority of the students can find their own financial sources to cover their expenses. A small number of bursaries will, however, be available, so please inform us if you wish to apply for such support. It is, however, wise to investigate other possible means of covering the expenses, since the number of such applications is certain to be much larger than the number of available bursaries. Tjörnarps Kursgård is a conference centre located in the province of Skåne in southern Sweden. It is situated in a forest area with good opportunities for different outdoor activities, such as jogging, swimming (there is a pool), angling (in a nearby lake) and other sport activities (soccer games will be arranged). The cost for the summer school is estimated to be around 10 000 SEK for university participants and around 20 000 SEK for others. The price includes food and lodging in single rooms and also the tuition fee, and school material (including three text books). Support will be asked for from the European Commission through the 6th framework programme. The outcome will not be known until next spring. If positive, a number of grants can be given to participants for EU and associated countries. We shall also attempt to find scholarships for students from the countries of the FSU. However, the outcome of all these efforts are uncertain and we recommend all students to try to find their own support. The number of students is limited to around 70. Participation can therefore
not be guaranteed for all applicants.
